GROUND
BREAKING SEMINAR EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS!
The
October 27th seminar on Domestic Violence, a collaborative venture
with Cuyahoga Valley Church and Abigail Ministries (Domestic Violence
support groups), was a resounding success. Ninety individuals
from the Greater Cleveland area attended. They represented community
agencies, counseling groups, nursing associations and court systems,
as well as Christian outreach organizations, church leaders and
individuals interested in better knowing how to help those dealing
with this complex issue.
The
FBI Crime Report and U.S. Department of Justice statistics on
Domestic Violence, which were presented, are staggering. There
was a consensus among the professionals at the seminar that none
had received any meaningful education or training on the topic
of Domestic Violence, or been given tools or resources to know
how best to respond when they encountered this issue in their
professional or personal lives.
We
are grateful to Pastor Ryan Edlind for initiating this event,
for his thoughtful reflections, and for his pastoral heart in
seeking to develop informed resources for troubled families. We
also extend our thanks to the staff and volunteers from Cuyahoga
Valley Church, who made the seminar possible; for their excellent
organization which contributed to the smooth running of the day;
and to Chick-Fil-A for donating the boxed lunches. The excellent
presentations by Sally Harvey and MaryLou Doebele of Abigail Ministries
provided much needed information and resources. Those who participated
in the skit left a lasting impression of how not to respond to
Domestic Violence situations, as well as modeling an effective
approach.
We
also offer heartfelt thanks to attorney, Steve Bailey, (Marco,
Marco and Bailey in Medina); Officer William “Bucky”
Schuster, (Brunswick Police Department); and Linda Johanek, LISW,
(Director of Development, the Domestic Violence Center in Cuyahoga
County) for bringing their experience and expertise to the Panel
discussion. Their thorough and informed responses to the seminar
participants’ questions provided much practical knowledge
and insight in to the complexities of this issue. We will gather
more information to respond to the questions which the panel did
not have time to address.
